How to Clean a Sleeping Bag

If your sleeping bag is starting to darken, lose its fluff, and show signs of buildup, it’s time for a deep clean. Over time, dirt and grime can seep into the insulation, compromising its warmth and overall quality. To help you maximize the life of your sleeping bag, our Camping Experts share three effective ways to clean it properly.

Tips to Consider Before Cleaning

  • Look at the care instructions on the manufacturer’s tag–Is it machine-washable or hand wash only?

  • Clean your sleeping bag at least once a year as it still collects dust and dirt in storage.

  • If you want to clean your sleeping bag less often, using a sleeping bag liner can help keep it fresher for longer.

  • Try avoiding dry cleaners as they use harsh chemicals that can strip the bag of its built-in technologies.

Cleaning Method #1: Machine Wash

  1. It is best to use a front-loading washing machine, as top loaders can damage your bag by entangling in the agitator column.

  2. When it comes to detergents, the best brand that can accommodate all types of sleeping bags, including synthetic and down, is Nikwax Tech Wash. This product doesn’t ruin the life of your sleeping bag like regular laundry detergents.

  3. Unzip the bag fully to ensure the washing machine cleans the inside and outside completely. This also prevents the slider from breaking.

Machine Cycle Instructions

  1. The general rule of thumb is to wash the bag on a gentle cycle with warm water, but follow the care instructions if applicable.

  2. It is recommended to put your bag through the cycle twice. If the insulation does not feel like dense clumps, then put it through one more time. The insulation should feel spongy.

  3. Try to remove the bag in one scoop to reduce tearing and gently roll the bag to squeeze out all the water.

Machine Drying

  1. Set your dryer on low heat.

  2. For down sleeping bags, toss a couple of tennis balls into the dryer to help restore their loft and fluff them back up. With synthetic bags, you can add tennis balls to break up the clumps to have them dry evenly. However, it is not required as it will most likely dry evenly on its own.

  3. Run as many cycles as you can for the sleeping bag to be completely dry (it can take up to 3-5 hours).

  4. Check on the bag frequently throughout the process to make sure it is not overheating.

  5. If you still think it is not completely dry after putting it in the dryer, place it on a drying rack or hang it up overnight.

Cleaning Method #2: Hand Washing

  1. Fill your bathtub with warm or cool water.

  2. Fill the tub with Nikwax Tech Wash or another fragrance-free soap. Be sure to use only a small amount of soap so it’s not too hard to rinse out.

  3. Put the entire sleeping bag in the tub and immerse it completely. Rub the most soiled parts together and allow it to soak for about an hour.

  4. Drain all the water out of the tub and carefully roll the bag up to squeeze out all the water.

  5. Fill up your bathtub again with just water and let it soak for 15 minutes. Continue to do this process until all the soap is gone.

  6. Once again, roll the bag up to squeeze out all the water.

Air Dry

  1. Lay your bag over a drying rack or hang it up (it can take anywhere from several hours to multiple days to completely dry).

  2. You may need to knead out the clumps of insulation manually throughout the drying process.

Cleaning Method #3: Spot Clean

If you only have minor areas to clean and you do not need to wash the whole bag:

  1. Grab a clean toothbrush and warm water with the same kind of soap that has been previously listed.

  2. Gently rub the brush over the soiled spot.

  3. Clean off the soap with a sponge.

  4. Let your bag air dry.

Keep in mind that the way you store your sleeping bag makes a huge difference when it comes to keeping it clean. By following these steps at least once a year, you can extend its lifespan and reduce the need for frequent replacements.
